Here’s the latest from Blu-ray.com
For the week of September 18th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (1973), starring Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb, Kitty Winn, Jack MacGowran and Jason Miller. Sourced from a 4K master, Warner presents The Exorcist in both its theatrical version and director’s cut, with HDR and a new Dolby Atmos audio mix for both cuts, as well as an original DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono audio track on the theatrical version. Continuing a recent trend at Warner, The Exorcist comes to 4K UHD as a two-disc set without Blu-ray discs, so extras on the release are limited to three previously released audio commentaries and a short introduction from William Friedkin. In addition to standard packaging, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook will also be available. Reviewer Randy Miller has reservations about the 4K UHD picture quality, particularly around a much-discussed color-timing issue during a key sequence, but he has high praise for the audio, awarding it a perfect 5 stars and calling the new Dolby Atmos remix “a startlingly effective presentation…discrete surround effects are used wisely, and of course the Atmos-exclusive height channels are put to good use too”. Of the film’s DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono track, he continues: “This is quite the rarity on home video — perhaps even its domestic debut — and sounds clean and polished with excellent fidelity and an overall front-forward dynamic that should delight purists”.
New this week on Blu-ray and 4K UHD from Walt Disney Home Entertainment is Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid (2023), starring Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Noma Dumezweni and Art Malik.
Description: The Little Mermaid is visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall’s live-action reimagining of Disney’s beloved animated musical classic, the story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy. “The Little Mermaid” is directed by Rob Marshall with a screenplay by David Magee, and is produced by Marc Platt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, John DeLuca and Rob Marshall.
Disney’s 4K UHD release of The Little Mermaid contains HDR and the film’s Dolby Atmos audio. Extras include a making of, song breakdowns, bloopers and two featurettes. While the Blu-ray is a wide release, the 4K UHD release in standard packaging is exclusive to the Disney Movie Club, although a Best Buy Exclusive 4K UHD SteelBook and a Walmart Exclusive 4K UHD with Enamel Pin will also be available….
