Here we are, after months of speculation and campaigning, AMPAS have announced the nominees for the upcoming 96th Annual Academy Awards and it is no surprise that the film with the most nominations is “Oppenheimer” with 13. It is closely followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10.
Despite getting 8 nominations it was not the best day for big contender “Barbie”, missing out in pivotal categories: Editing, Director and Lead Actress. It is usually a precedent that if a film is to have any chance of winning Best Picture it needs an editing and/or a directing nomination, and with Greta Gerwig‘s film missing both, it does not bode well for Barbie in Picture. The only three films to get editing, screenplay and director are the seriously strong Oppenheimer and Poor Things, as well as “Anatomy of a Fall” which racked up an impressive 5 nominations, despite not being submitted for International Film.
