The FDA today published its 2024 YEARBOOK with a breakfast launch at The Peninsula London, attended by member companies and key industry partners.
Now in its 22nd edition, the annual FDA YEARBOOK has become the essential guide to the UK and Irish theatrical market. The event was hosted by FDA Chief Executive Andy Leyshon who introduced film journalist, author and Empire magazine Editor-at-Large Helen O’Hara to launch the book.
Speaking positively and passionately about the enduring draw of the cinema experience, Helen O’Hara said:
“We are all here because the thing that unites us is a deep and abiding love of cinema, and the hope that we all have is that everybody else in the planet will learn to share that love.”
With a primary focus on the 2023 theatrical market, the Yearbook features data and analysis on box office performance for the five home nations; cinemagoing broken down by day, week and month; focus on key genre performance; and insight into audience attitudes and behaviours. Also included are in-depth articles on accessibility, diversity, education, piracy and sustainability; a look at the top global box office markets; and information on home entertainment including streaming.
2023 saw UK and Irish theatrical box office break the £1bn barrier (£1.06bn) for the first time since 2019 – rising 8% on the already strong recovery results of 2022 – with admissions exceeding 135m (+6%). 1,013 titles were released into cinemas across the year, the highest volume of releases recorded in the territory since modern records began.
Andy Leyshon, FDA Chief Executive, commented:
“Looking back at cinemagoing in the UK and Ireland during 2023 in detail, it was great to see the theatrical business continue on its recovery path with some truly unique cultural moments that successfully captured the consumer zeitgeist. Hopefully the FDA Yearbook conveys that sense of optimism at what cinema can achieve, whilst continuing to be a handy and insightful resource for our members and anyone else with a keen interest in the sector.”
Box office data for the book is kindly supplied by Comscore, alongside information from Gower Street Analytics and MetrixLab, much of which is previously unpublished.
