UK & Ireland Cinemas Celebrate National Cinema Day
On Saturday 3 September, more than 630 cinemas across the home nations are to unite in celebration of National Cinema Day. As a salute to the thrill and wonder of the big screen experience, participating venues will offer tickets to all screenings taking place on that day from just £3 (€4 in the Republic of Ireland). The initiative has been led by the cross-industry body Cinema First and is supported by both the UK Cinema Association and the Film Distributors’ Association.
Operators joining the sector-wide enterprise, the first of its kind since the 1990s, include all of the major exhibition circuits as well as many smaller chains and independently run venues. Backed by an extensive marketing campaign across broadcast, digital and outdoor networks, the focus of the day will be to celebrate the spectacle of film in all its grandeur and glory, encouraging as wide an audience as possible to experience the communal joy of cinemagoing.
Speaking about the upcoming National Cinema Day, Iain Jacob, Chair of Cinema First said:
‘There seems no better time than now to celebrate UK cinema-going, one of the nation’s favourite out-of-home leisure activities. Coming off the back of a very strong summer for the sector and looking forward to further film highlights over the rest of the year, we wanted to give everyone a chance to enjoy the big screen experience.
While all the evidence confirms that cinemagoing is amongst the most low-cost, best value-for-money leisure opportunities, we also of course recognise that there are significant impacts on household finances, brought about by the current cost of living crisis and wanted to do our bit to make a trip to the cinema even more affordable for the whole family.’
The UK & Ireland cinema sector has enjoyed one of the strongest post-pandemic recoveries worldwide with admissions for January to July having already surpassed 2021’s total. Cinemagoing is among the best value-for-money out-of-home leisure activities and with the current cost of living crisis creating substantial strain on household incomes, National Cinema Day is aimed at making a trip to the pictures that bit more economical.
